<image:title>Family - I was the youngest cousin and I did not get to see or hang out with my older cousins very often, but I would be told stories of their accomplishments and adventures and always be inspired. The stories I heard of my cousin Peter always made me think of him as a kind of superhero when I was younger. I was fascinated by the story of him riding his bicycle across the country and astounded by his accomplishments as a champion wrestler in high school. On the occasions that I did get to see him and hang out with him, usually at Christmas time at my mother's family party or at Thanksgiving at</image:title>

<image:title>Family - Memories of the Cape: Pete showing me how to body surf. The big insight was not being afraid to have the wave start to break on you (a little scary), and not to let it go by you and try to swim after it. Pete taking us on an exploration drive on a narrow, rutted, dirt road, down a steep winding hill in Provincetown, wondering whether we would be able to get the car back up. Lugging wood with Pete onto the beach in the evening at Coast Guard Beach and sitting around the campfire in the dark with family and friends. Visiting Pete and Andy in Cambridge and going for a walk along the Charles River, with Pete telling me how much dough he thought he needed for retirement and that he was just about there. Hiking from our eco lodge in St. Johns with the goal of finding a bar where Pete could watch the Patriots in the play-offs. Pete was an all-around good guy. He did meaningful work as a union rep, he was a sportsman, a ceramicist, a lover of the outdoors who was always looking for new places, a good husband to Andy, and a good friend to Alice and me. We miss him.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - Pete was intense on the golf course and wanted to make the most of every shot. He hated distractions as one of the unwritten rules of golf is to be quiet and motionless when someone in the group is executing a shot. Now Mike and I are not quite like that. We don't mind if there is some conversation or joking going on while we prepare to hit the golf ball. One day, as Pete prepared to hit a shot at Old Scotland Links, I stood about 20 feet from Pete and noticed a plastic water bottle on the ground.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - I was fortunate enough to know Pete for my whole life. He was my uncle. My only uncle from my dad’s side of the family. It’s hard to remember just a few memories of Pete because we shared so many. He was always willing to play a game; whether it be wiffle ball in the backyard of grandma and grandpa’s or Aces in the hospital while receiving chemo. He was comforting; always providing a shoulder to sleep on as a kid, then providing his home when I’d visit Boston. I always knew I’d be welcomed with open arms. Pete inspired me in many ways. His love for pottery has been adopted into my own love for art. His desire for adventure has encouraged me to push my limits and explore the world. And his passion for sustainability was the first to open my eyes in the ways that I can help in making a difference. There was never judgement from Pete. He began with curiosity and would return with advice. He cared and he loved about so many people he’s met throughout his life. It was an honor to be with him throughout his final months on this earth. To witness his strength through chemo. By continuing to make jokes even when he could barely open his eyes. And his desire to say goodbye personally to all those he truly loved. He has touched so many and I hope that they will share his light as they continue on earth. Until we meet again Pete! Give everyone a big hug up there and watch over us. I love you!</image:title>

<image:title>Family - Even at birth Peter was “tall” and very thin, had a dark complexion and was covered all over with long black hair. When the nurse brought him to Mum for the first time and announced “ Here’s your baby boy Mrs. Berry!” Mum replied, “That’s not MY baby!” thinking to herself, “He looks like a Monkey!” But the nurse insisted it was indeed her baby boy, Peter Joseph. But look how that little “duckling” grew into the most beautiful swan!!! Inside and out! Every day after school my brothers and I came home to an after school snack of milk and cookies. In the kitchen, our dad had built all the cabinets and he made two sliding countertop “shelves” that, when opened, made a place for two to sit at.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - We were fortunate to be able to vacation with Peter and Andy on numerous occasions. We say lucky because when we let them take the lead, we found ourselves in many wondrous places. They turned us on to life in the Eco Village in St. John’s in the Caribbean where we stayed in tents that had a living room, bedroom, an open air kitchen and deck that looked out at rolling green hills dotted with lush trees and a view of the bluest waters and not so far away islands. From our little perches, we could hike down the hill to snorkel and swim and picnic and plan future adventures. And there were many: the fabulous beach vacation in Eleuthera in the Bahamas where Pete and Andy found a sweet bungalow with steep steps that lead to our very own blue green swimming grotto; in Costa Rica we rented a house without walls. In the summer, we made sure to book our Cape Cod rentals the same week in August for the past ten years. Pete and Andy had a rule about this week; they always had to do something new or visit a new place.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - I think about Pete a good deal these days. I regret I didn’t spend more time with him and yet, in hindsight, I feel as if I knew him well, as if there was a deep connection. I’m certain many others felt the same way. Yes, I saw the humor, but I remember a kindly humor, and always a good will towards others. He had a warm and gentle intensity, and a kindness. He brought out the best in everyone without overlooking anything. I never knew anyone like him.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - For some reason, in my head, I have a strong memory of playing at your house, especially around 4th of July. I remember I used to love climbing up the creaky wood stairs to the roof and being "really careful" with each step. The roof was a fun place for me where I could go up, be high above, and look at everything so small beneath. I probably also liked it because I could be quietly nosey and peek around to see what others were doing. I remember being up on the roof for 4th of July and watching the Boston fireworks in the distance. It was beautiful, and knowing that I was in the comfort of my loved ones meant the world. Being able to brag and say, "I watched the Boston fireworks from my aunt and uncle's roof for 4th of July" was a huge perk too! I also remember always asking for natural almonds out of the mason jar in your kitchen when I was young. Pete was much taller than us and could reach up, screw the top off, and pour a few almonds into our eager hands.</image:title>

<image:caption>Peter was always warm and caring. We had a connection, without judgement, often engaged in conversations of people, travel and an appreciation for different cultures around the world. He studied in Australia then traveled across Asia for a year. Early on, I traveled internationally for work and grew a passion to see other countries, he was always interested in our latest venture. Our girls studied abroad, and he enjoyed sharing their adventures. We shared a love for Cape Cod... the endless beaches, laid-back lifestyle, quaint villages, seafood shacks, lighthouses and art galleries, not to mention, time with those we loved. For over thirty years, Steve and I vacationed with our family in summer cottages at the Cape, as did Peter and Andy. We would often spend a day or two together by the ocean, enjoying the beach, a beautiful sunset or an evening cook-out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Family - In the late Spring of 1976 and I was working in Fitchburg, MA managing a retail store. Late morning, Pete walks into the store wearing bike riding gear. He says, "Steve, see you in about 3 months; I'm on my way to the Pacific." This was the first day of many days riding his bike cross county with his three friends, Kevin Hawley, Dave Hawley and Jim O'Hara. <image:title>Family - It's one of the only times I can remember hanging with Pete and Andy and their friends. It was fun to see this side of them— one I didn't get to see often, as their niece who lived two and a half hours away. I was familiar with the settings of family gatherings; a handful of times each year, mostly for holidays. I saw Pete then as my young, playful uncle, who would play yard games or board games to help keep us kids entertained. He was quiet, gentle, and cool. I always thought Pete was so cool. This night though, on the Cape— salty air, starry sky, smokey fire. Friends, family, laughter— so much laughter. I got to see Pete through my new, "adult" set of eyes, as we shared drinks and let loose together in a way we hadn't before. There were these tiny, luminescent plankton on the beach that would glow in the dark if you dragged a foot through the sand. That kept us entertained for a while. Pete was child-like and giddy and free.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - Peter was such a special person . . . he always listened with interest in what I had to say, even when I was a little kid . . . he had a way about him that made you feel like you mattered . . . truly a gift . . .</image:title>

<image:title>Family - In fond remembrance of my cousin Pete’s birthday, I recall several delightful occasions where Pete, my brother Bob, Kevin and cousin Steve met to do what only true “Peter Berrys” can do, and turn a friendly game of whist into a competitive battle where the victors left with some cool cash in their pockets and plenty of bragging rights. Looking back, I realize the win/loss ratio of the game was second to the satisfying chuckles Pete produced with the most deadpanned commentary as a continuous stream of unexpected neighbors dropped by, massive amounts of food were foisted upon our already full bellies, and we engaged in random acts of joke telling about our elders. Pete’s always good nature reminded us less-patient mortals that these interruptions were in fact not obstacles to our day’s plans, but in fact were gifts to be embraced! I’ll always cherish Pete’s wry smile, understated, yet powerful wit that proved how truly wise, ridiculously funny and kind he really was.</image:title>

<image:title>Family - I grew up with Pete. As we got older Pete would come up to lake Winnipesaukee with the family and we got in a lot of trouble. One time we lit the woods on fire and the fire department and our parents had to put it out. Pete had recently had a similar problem at the tannery near his house and didn’t want to participate. He told us we would soon learn what he learned about lighting fires. He was right. The funniest time for me was on Christmas night when I drove the car and Joe Barrett, Steve Riekert, Jim Tibert and Pete went to the Oxford Ale House in Harvard Square. We had done it a number of times on Christmas night since it was one of the few places open on that night.</image:title>

On special family occasions I liked the way he made salad dressing and a good pot of coffee, as well. <image:title>Friends - The memory I want to share of Pete is how he called you "And." It's a short word, but it had a lot of love embedded in it somehow. Often, he said it when you were goofy or said something uniquely you or made him laugh. He would smile and shake his head gently and say, "Oh, And." Why did this get my attention? I don't know. It's a funny nickname. You have to make an effort to get the "d" sound in there. It's much easier to say "Ann" or "Andy," but he took the trouble to enunciate the full roundness of the single syllable. And when he said it, I felt like I got brought into a certain intimacy. I got to see his love for you. I liked witnessing that. It's understated. It's short. But you have to actually say it all the way through -- with care. It's very Pete, and I just loved him for that.</image:title>

<image:title>Friends - In February, 2004, after taking part in a literacy forum in Patna, India, friends and colleagues Andy Nash, Brenda Bell, and I travelled on to Kerala on the southwest coast of India along with Beth’s partner Rich Kirby and Andy’s partner Pete Berry. We spent most of a week together travelling from the city of Trivandrum to Varkala for three nights overlooking the Indian Ocean and then two nights on an excursion boat on the backwaters of Kerala, stopping to visit small communities along the way north. We ended our time together in the city of Cochin. This journey together was an amazing opportunity to travel through a beautiful and peaceful place; it was also a time to be together as a group of new friends. It was the time Rich and I got to know and appreciate Pete as a travelling companion and friend. Here are a few photos, one outside our cabins in Varkala, one at our favorite Number 1 Beach Restaurant, one of Pete at the barber’s and one traveling up the backwaters that Pete must have taken since he isn’t in it.</image:title>

<image:title>Friends - I love Andy's expression "celebrate all the goodness that is Pete." There was enormous goodness in Pete. He was one of the most wonderful men I’ve known. Whenever I think of Pete, I hear his laugh and see his eyes squint slightly in giggle mode. I still take pride in our recycling efforts at dnh (our old workplace), always think of him during March Madness, and enjoyed talking with him about art and life. The years spent playing softball together on the Harvard University Union team rank high in my memory banks, too. It was the only co-ed team I ever played on, and I'm so glad I did. One favorite moment was when some guy on the opposing team hit the ball waaayyyy over Pete's head in center field. As he ran to retrieve it, Pete yelled to me: "GET READY FOR THE RELAY!" (I was the short-fielder.) I could already see that the batter was rounding third-base while the ball was still traveling AWAY from Pete. By the time he got the ball, the batter was home eating a slice of pizza., LOL! What determination and focus (along with optimism) Pete had! Peter was kind, steady, creative, intelligent, compassionate, funny, silly, strong, insightful, thoughtful, and much, much more! We had been friends for nearly 40 years. I am grateful.</image:title>

<image:title>Friends - There is a lifetime’s worth of memories we shared with Pete. We’re reminded of him daily in our home. We eat from his bowls. We store our Tahini upside down until it’s opened, Pete’s suggestion (it makes it easier to mix once it is opened). Much of the kindling that starts our wood stove on many winter days came from Pete. And that’s where I’m choosing to focus. We live in Western MA. Our wood stove is our only source of heat. My partner, Waino, is a man I have referred to as a fanatic recycler. His reputation preceded him as people learned that he removed the staple from the tag on a tea bag to recycle them separately as metal and paper. Pete and Waino lived on the same recycling planet and they bonded over it. Over the years that Pete and Andy visited us, we could be guaranteed that they would arrive with a trunk load of wood. Usually it was boxed, sometimes bundled. The bundles were comprised of lath that came from the former walls of their house. We have used these laths for years as kindling, for marking the rows of our garden, as paint stirrers. There are still a number of them in our basement waiting to be used for the next wood stove burning. The boxes of wood were filled with pieces that were precisely cut by Pete so that space was utilized to the max. At the bottom of one box, after going through the larger pieces, I found two popsicle sticks. I laughed. Pete and Waino also traded back and forth plastic which at one time could be recycled in Cambridge but not in Huntington and vice versa. The category of ‘soft plastic, non crinkley’ was one of those that Waino stuffed in bags and saved for Pete to deposit at his end of the state. In fact, the last time we saw Pete, Waino mentioned those plastic bags wondering what he would do with them now. That puzzle has been solved by the advent of the recent pandemic. Waino is using the sleeve bags that newspapers are delivered in, sliding one over his hand as protection each time he pumps gas at the gas station. I’m thinking that Pete would be nodding his head in approval at this creative reuse. I think that the passion, care and creativity Pete displayed in the world of recycling could also be felt in the world of his friendships. He saved and savored countless memories and carried us with him over time. We loved that he was our friend. Waino’s fondest memories of Pete circle around an annual winter snowshoe trip that Waino, our brother in law, Bill and Pete took to our camp in Lakeville, ME, a remote spot at any time but especially in the winter. Some years they snowshoed miles in bitter cold with wind chills well below zero. The more adventurous and wild the experience, the better Pete liked it. One year it was pouring rain as they trudged their way in. A truck coming through offered them a lift, as they were soaking wet. Waino and Bill jumped right on. Pete, it seems, felt that it was too easy a way in. One winter there was no snow. They still had fun. Ice fishing was undertaken. Then Pete invented a game where rocks had to be tossed across the ice and land in a designated spot. He called it ice bocce or ice bowling. Bill remembers that same year sitting in front of the wood stove and playing hours of stratomatic baseball. Pete loved announcing the games like they would be announced on the radio. Remembering these times brings smiles and sadness.</image:title>

The two years at Rutgers weren’t always so cheery, but Pete made being there immeasurably better. In our second year he moved into the floor above me in an old run-down house alongside a railroad bridge, a crazy time marked by a neighborhood arsonist repeatedly setting fire to the house next door. All the while, Pete was making an amazing piece for his thesis show, transforming his entire studio into a linked set of spaces dominated by a large semicircular chamber lined with lattice. It was fascinating to watch him work through its creation, always full of doubt and self-questioning, trying to understand what these intuitions he had were all about. When I think of it now it seems— though how could we know so at the time?— a rehearsal of sorts for the restoration of the house that he and Andy bought together and, with the help of his dad, poured in years of loving toil to make their home. That place made the whole art/life distinction irrelevant. After Rutgers we stayed in touch and visited from time to time, the one friend from those years I felt truly close to. With Pete in Cambridge and me in Brooklyn, there were gaps where we didn’t talk for awhile, and while our paths diverged in certain ways, I was thrilled to discover after a period out of touch that we had both gotten involved at our jobs as union activists; learning this felt like a real affirmation, and we talked a lot about the satisfaction we drew from it- more so than from the jobs themselves. We fantasized about trips together, if only the bills could be put on hold. A dozen years later we finally made a trip we’d long talked about- a drive through the southwest, to destinations we’d never been. As it turned out, it was just a few weeks after 9/11 and a lot of people were afraid to fly; there was no way we were going to skip this trip though, and we put aside our skittishness and embarked from our different towns. We met up in Vegas and rented a huge 4-wheel drive SUV- overkill, I thought, but anything less, Pete insisted, would be a problem where we were going. That first day out we headed to Death Valley, stopping at a mom-and-pop filling station that billed itself as “last chance,” allaying our fantasies of being stranded with an empty tank as the buzzards sized us up from above. Inside the station they sold a variety of homemade jerky, an exotic find for us easterners - no way could we pass this up. Pulling back out onto the highway, we both took a big bite of our road snack, looked at each other and and burst out laughing: here we were 96 degrees in the blazing sun, headed into the desert with three bags of dried, salty meat. From there on, we’d think again before following those primitive impulses. We covered a lot of ground on that trip: camping two nights in Joshua Tree Park, with a plan to traverse the park and exit out the south end. We drove for miles over the most treacherous roads I’ve ever been on- had I been driving I’d have turned around, certain as I was that we were about to break an axle; several times I had to get out and guide him around and over boulders- Pete though was simply enjoying the challenge. We hiked down from the North Rim into the Grand Canyon together, taxing on the calves but truly unforgettable. We also rode through the Imperial Valley, through the pungent smells of the Salton Sea and over to Niland, CA, to a folk art environment named Salvation Mountain, created single-handedly by a charming man named Leonard Knight. We chatted with him a bit, and as we explored the place I could see Pete’s eyes aglow- the picture below is from some video I shot there, Pete holding a car window decorated with an angel. I love you deeply, my friend…</image:title>

<image:title>Friends - Not long ago, right after I had left a job of 10 years contemplating next steps, while Pete was thinking of ramping down at work and possibly heading toward retirement, we got into a conversation that for me so captured his funny way of thinking. It made me laugh at the time, and even he got a kick out of it, though he was probably at least half-serious. Because I do small carpentry work on the side (though it's not really what I want to be doing full time), and because he and I were of very similar temperaments when it comes to detail, he suggested we go into business together. When I reminded him of the fact that I don't really want to spend 5 days a week doing something I'm not very interested in, and he admitted that he wouldn't either, he suggested we still go into business and call the business "2 Guys 1 Day a Week."</image:title>

<image:title>Friends - There aren't actually specific times that I recall when Peter made me laugh. Maybe that's because Peter always made me laugh. When I think of Pete, I can hear his voice and his laugh so clearly in my head; in fact, I don't actually see him in my mind's eye, but I hear him. Peter would invariably greet me with that warm smile every time I would walk into your house and up the stairs. I always felt so comfortable with him, as I did with you -- like I was putting on a pair of old shoes that fit perfectly. Peter had that wonderful voice and would speak with an accent (Boston? Norwood?) that I came to love because of him. He was so quick-witted that you really had to pay attention to what he was saying to catch all of his one-liners. My strongest memory right now is of the wonderful time we just had on the Cape with you two this summer, going to the windswept beach, looking for sharks, eating dinner together with16 year old Pau, who of course hit it off with Pete as soon as he met him. Who didn't? Watching Peter and Pau play a putting game inside your rented cottage is a moment that will indelibly be etched in my mind as one of my favorite memories. I miss Peter and will feel that way forever.</image:title>

<image:title>Softball Team - Two things come to mind about Peter. First, his random and nutty batting orders kept us amused and on our toes: “Line up in the order of the first letter of your middle name! Or the day of the month you were born! Or the furthest birthplace away from Boston!” They were always spontaneous, creative and deeply non-competitive. For as much as he cared about playing well himself, he never arranged batting orders in a way to win the game, as most captains would, because doing so would rank people according to their skill and that’s not what Fogg softball was about. The competitive part of me (and others) grumbled, and he probably knew that, but the principles of fairness and fun mattered most, and ultimately we all respected that; it kept the games fun and gave the team great espirit de corps. We also loved how he never got down about a losing game, and always had an encouraging word for anyone who was. Year in and year out, he was field captain for a reason. One amusing moment came to mind from our softball season two years ago. After a game we went to the roof of the Tufts library for pizza and beer. With his typical good-natured competitiveness, Peter suggested we try tossing the pizza boxes off the roof into the trash dumpsters several stories below. It was impossible, none of them went in, and, like the good citizen he was, he went down to collect them and throw them away. I took a photo of him from above with my phone and next day circulated it among the team saying the Tufts police had issued a surveillance camera photo with a request for information about the people who had been eating and drinking on the library roof. I think it took a minute before he cottoned on it was a practical joke, which he took with customary grace and good humor. One way and another Peter was at the heart of our team. Off and on, I played with him for 25 years, maybe more; I will miss him. The team will play on but his spirit and integrity can’t be replaced.</image:title>

<image:title>Work Friends - Of all the wonderful things that Peter did around the Union office, I think maybe my quiet, low-key favorite was the way he would enforce the recycling rules for paper and bottles/cans – and I mean that literally: not the fact THAT he would act as recycling enforcer but HOW he did it.</image:title>

<image:title>Work Friends - My friendship with Peter began roughly 25 years ago, when I joined the Registrars department at the Fogg, and shared the “preparator” position with Peter. We were happy half-time workers (proud HUCTW members!), working together over the next 14 years, as part of a group that became colleagues and our museum family. We were happy to be there a few days a week and fortunate to have ample time to pursue our own projects and pleasures. It was an easy friendship to cultivate: our similar studio backgrounds and interests, and progressive politics dovetailed immediately. But it was Peter’s warmth and openness that was the real foundation, camaraderie and compassion. We had a weekly ritual that was part of our official job responsibilities: University Loans. The museum owns a small, self-contained collection of 2-dimensional works that has accumulated over the years, pieces that could be borrowed by any university employee with a secure work space and a few budget dollars to cover a nominal installation and rental fee. With minor exceptions, it had all the endearing qualities of a Romanian orphanage after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Every Tuesday, the unlucky registrar who was supervising the program would compile a list of pieces to be installed or retrieved from the 4 corners of the Realm of Veritas. Peter and I would reluctantly accept the list, silently praying that it was short and very local. The list itself, no matter how many copies we started with, could be misplaced at any point. The collection was stored in the Sackler building and the means of conveyance was a decrepit box truck that would have embarrassed the Beverly Hillbillies. On a nice spring day, it could actually be very pleasant to cruise the streets of Cambridge or Boston with our hapless cargo, catching up on politics, projects and general gossip. The goal at each stop was to do a professional job and make our clients happy - and move on as fast as possible. I’m pleased to report that we had a very good batting average. But the true objective – and the one that Peter and I took most seriously – was to find the best possible option for a coffee break. The criteria: A decent and fairly priced cup o’ Joe; a somewhat legal parking space for the jalopy; an appropriately welcoming atmosphere; and extra points if the café sold day old pastries that were still edible. High standards, yes; but Peter and I were professionals! The last time I saw Peter was, like most of our encounters over the past decade, unplanned and had the wonderful spontaneity of a chance encounter with a good friend. It was at the opening of the last ceramics sale. I had already seen Peter’s great set of pieces - and purchased another "favorite.” We spent a nice block of time catching up. Despite some dicey health news, he assured me that everything would be OK. A month later, when the beast beneath the surface emerged and the futile race to survive unwound, I lamented that I was not able to be with Peter one last time. Then, I gradually realized how special my last minutes with Peter in the ceramics studio were. Love you, good friend, Peter.</image:title>
